Trip Planning is the secret to a great trip, I love to plan travel, I love lists, I love to go before I go.
Where to go, where to stay, how to get there and what to do when I get there…and the list of questions goes on.
I know how you feel, but you can do it.
I have always planned and booked online so here is my grand list of resources that I use to get the best deals and good service for short and long term travel.
Here is a list of websites and resources that I use:
Accomodation–quite important and can be expensive if not careful.
Flights – most of us need to fly somewhere…
Travel Insurance – Yikes if something goes wrong I want this!
Trains & Taxis – on the ground transport – where and how to book
Rail Europe – If you are going to Europe for awhile and doing a lot of long train trips, get a rail pass. You will save money or sure.
The man in seat 61 – A travellers dream for getting around the world on the ground, trains, buses, ferries, rail passes – the whole shebang here even the Trans Siberian!
I hate taxis – yep I sure do, in fact I despise that little counter ticking over. This is an extremely clever website, shows all the transport options and prices at specified destinations al around the world.
Had I not used this for Bali I would have paid 4 times the price for my short ride to the hotel. What a site full of awesomeness!
Tour Companies – although usually we go independent there are some great tours around also.
City Travel Guides – Nomadic Notes has in depth guides for cities and countries around the world.
Guide Books – Here’s some that I like if you must use a Guide Book.
Great Travel Deals – always like a great deal.
Travel Forums – other travellers you been there before have good tips you may not think about.
Trip Advisor – In the main great reviews and forums for advice on specific sights, hotels, restaurants, transport – Seek out the savvy reviews from those that have been there, done that. Read judiciously though, there are some grandstanders who just like to fuss for the sake of hearing their own voice.
Boots N All – Adventure Travel Community for Indie Travel: I love Boots n All, they are just full of awesomeness, information and a great traveller community.
Keeping in Touch – make sure friends and family know you’re still alive
Travel Tech – all the convenient stuff to take with you
Work for Lodgings – great sites where you can work in exchange for bed and food.
Visas – don’t wanna get sent home – make sure you have the right one
Vaccinations – sometime you just need to get that injection before you go
Other good general info – stuff like currency exchange and electricity plugs around the world
Hope this helps you on your Round the World Planning, do let me know if there is any other great ideas I should add to this list.
